Yellow House
Project type
Single Family Residential
Location
Charlotte, NC
The owners of this 1903 mill house in Charlotte's NoDa neighborhood fell in love with its charm but not its 1 bed/1 bath layout. As a contributing structure to the North Charlotte Historic District, the house had eligibility for historic preservation tax credits for renovation if it complied with the Department of Interiors Standards of Historic Preservation.
Balancing between the owner's budget, timeline, need for one additional bedroom, and historic preservation guidelines, Patch created a new floor plan with minimal disturbance to the existing house. The North Carolina Office of Historic Preservation inspected the plan prior to construction, documented the house after completion, and found it in compliance with preservation guidelines.
This was mine and my wife's first house. We loved this house very, very much, and we are proud of the work we completed as stewards of the house. When we bought it, the house had already been placed into a trust of historically significant buildings throughout NC — stewarded by the excellent Historic Preservation Foundation of North Carolina. We hope the work we completed on the house will keep it useful and enjoyable to its owners for many years to come.
