Buckhead Lake House
House Renovation
Buckhead, Georgia

This renovation adapts a lake house for owners transitioning to full-time life on the water. The project combines strategic additions with a careful reorganization of the interior to create greater clarity, comfort, and flow. A new three-bay garage with habitable space above is paired with a ten-foot extension of the existing house, allowing for a generous new primary closet and primary bathroom. Inside the house, the entry sequence, kitchen, and laundry room are reconfigured to better support daily routines. The kitchen is organized around a strong axis of symmetry shared by the range, island, and entry, introducing order to the entry into the great room. That same symmetry establishes the spacing for new heavy timber beams, which become a defining structural and visual element throughout the house. These beams repeat to the outside of the house to form full timber bents on both the arrival facade and the lake-facing facade, giving the house a cohesive architectural language. Originally conceived as an attached structure, the garage was ultimately detached in response to side-yard setbacks and steep topography. This separation improved the overall composition and allowed for a more deliberate entry sequence. The front door was relocated from the great room to a new adjacent entry hall, complete with a coat closet, which provides a more gracious place to welcome guests. The transition from this compressed entry into the soaring great room creates a moment of surprise, reinforcing a strong sense of arrival and making the most of the existing lakeside house.
