OCAF Garden Stairs

Exterior Renovation

Watkinsville, Georgia

This exterior renovation transforms a little-used and out-of-code concrete stairway into a sculptural and functional addition to the Oconee Cultural Arts Foundation. Built over an existing side stair, the new stair and viewing platform enhance the connection between the gallery and the adjacent outdoor sculpture garden, offering an inviting space for visitors to pause and engage with the outdoor art. The metal railing, designed and crafted by a local artist, serves as both a safety feature and an artistic element, complementing OCAF's mission to promote the arts. At the base of the stair, new bench seating draws inspiration from the rubble stone cheeks of the original stair, maintaining a link to the building’s historic character. A new metal awning provides cover for the gallery door. The renovation balances respect for the building context with playful updates, creating an engaging transition between the interior gallery and the outdoor experience.
